Insider knowledge for an authentic Thessaloniki experience.

🚌 Getting Around
🏙️

Walk the City Centre

Most attractions in Thessaloniki are within walking distance of each other. The city centre is flat and very pedestrian-friendly — ditch the taxi for anything under 2km.

🚌

OASTH City Buses

The city bus network (OASTH) covers most areas. Buy a reloadable card at kiosks (periptera) for cheaper fares. Line 78 connects the airport to the city centre.

Walk the Waterfront

The seafront promenade stretches from the White Tower all the way to the harbour — about 2km. It's flat, beautiful, and the best way to feel the city's rhythm. Perfect at any time of day.

Avoid Driving in the Centre

Parking in the city centre is a nightmare. If you must drive, use the Makedonia Palace underground car park or park further out and walk in. Taxi apps like Beat work well here.

Bougatsa for Breakfast

Thessaloniki is the birthplace of bougatsa. Start your morning with a warm slice of custard or cheese-filled filo pastry from a local shop. It costs around 2€ and is best eaten fresh.

Koulouri — The Perfect Snack

A sesame-crusted bread ring sold by street vendors for under 1€. It's the local on-the-go snack. You'll spot the yellow carts all over the city centre — grab one anytime.

Coffee Culture

Greeks don't rush their coffee. Ordering a freddo espresso or frappé means settling in for at least an hour. Nobody will ever bring you the bill until you ask — enjoy the pace.

Ladadika District at Night

Ladadika is the old warehouse district turned bar and restaurant hub. Come here on evenings for a lively atmosphere, ouzo, mezedes and local music. Best Thu–Sun.

Late Night Souvlaki

After a night out, a souvlaki wrap for 2-3€ is essential Thessaloniki tradition. Many souvlaki spots stay open until 4am — just follow the locals.

The White Tower is most photogenic in the hour before sunset, when it glows warm orange against the Thermaic Gulf. Arrive early to claim a good spot on the waterfront promenade.

Walk up to the upper city (Ano Poli) for a breathtaking panoramic view of Thessaloniki and the Gulf. The Byzantine walls at sunset are stunning. Wear comfortable shoes — it's hilly.

Best Time to Visit

April–June and September–October are ideal: warm, sunny, and with fewer tourists. Spring brings flowers to Ano Poli, and September still has beach weather near the city.

What Things Cost

Thessaloniki is very affordable by European standards. Expect to pay: koulouri 0.80€, coffee 2-3€, souvlaki 2.50€, full taverna meal 10-18€ per person. Budget around 30-40€/day for food and activities.

Free Things to Do

The waterfront promenade, Ano Poli streets, Aristotelous Square, and all Byzantine-era churches are free to visit. Add free-Sunday museums and you can have a full day out for almost nothing.

Shop Smart

Avoid souvenir shops near the White Tower — they charge tourist prices. Head to Kapani market or Tsimiski Street for better quality at real prices. For local food products, the market stalls beat any supermarket.
